Making and Breaking Words

| Materials: magnetic letters |
| Goal: Given a "word family" word made out of magnetic letters, the student will identify the onset and rime and separate and reform the word. |
| Items: Word Family words such as words ending in -at, -ind, -ing, -est, -air, -en, -it, -eed, -ock, -ug, -up, etc. |
[edit] What to do
- Students will build a word family word, such as "cat," with magnetic letters.
- After reading the word, the student will identify the onset and rime.
- The student will place one hand on the onset and one hand on the rime. Then he/she will slide the word apart and put it back together while saying the word.
- The student will then create new words that belong to the same word family and repeat the activity.
